Build-Up Specialism

Underfloor heating for every floor type.

The right build-up is the difference between a system that performs and a system that disappoints. We design for the floor in front of us — screeded, timber suspended, or one of the bespoke floating floor solutions we specialise in.

01 · Screeded Floors

Pipe-in-screed — the architectural standard.

Pipework embedded within a flowing or traditional screed over insulation. The most thermally even and durable system we install, and the default choice for new builds and major renovations with solid floor construction.

Typical build-up: 50–75 mm including insulation, pipework and screed. Both liquid (Cemfloor, Gyvlon, Tarmac Topflow, Gypsol) and traditional sand & cement screeds available.

  1. 01Structural floor — concrete slab or beam & block
  2. 02Insulation layer — high-density EPS or PIR
  3. 03Edge insulation strip — prevents heat loss & allows expansion
  4. 04Underfloor heating pipework — fixed to insulation
  5. 05Liquid or traditional screed — over the pipework
  6. 06Finish — tile, stone, engineered timber, microcement

02 · Timber Suspended

Sensitive to heritage. Preserves headroom.

Pipework, insulation and aluminium heat-diffusion plates set between existing timber joists — installed from above or below depending on access. Quick to warm up and ideal for first-floor retrofits and period properties where weight or floor height are critical.

  • From below — for retrofitting without lifting floors
  • From above — joists exposed, pipework set between
  • Low-profile overboarding — laid over existing floorboards
03 · Floating Floors · Our Speciality

Bespoke floating floor systems.

The floating floor is where we do some of our most considered work. Each installation is configured around the property in front of us — substrate, available depth, finish, acoustic requirement and programme — and rarely uses an off-the-shelf build-up without modification.

We routinely deliver build-ups between 20 mm and 60 mm with no wet trades on site, making them the right answer for retrofit, upper-floor extensions and heritage projects where screed isn't practical.

Bespoke Build-Up
  1. 01Existing structural floor — concrete or timber
  2. 02Acoustic / thermal layer — selected per project
  3. 03Pre-grooved insulation panels with pipework channels
  4. 04PE-Xa pipework — laid in pre-formed channels
  5. 05Aluminium heat-diffusion plates
  6. 06T&G chipboard, plywood or specialist UFH deck
  7. 07Finish — engineered timber, LVT, tile, stone
Why MJP for Floating Floors
  • Truly bespoke
Every panel layout, channel route and zoning strategy designed for the room — not a kit dropped on a substrate.
  • 20–60 mm build-up
Low-profile depths that protect threshold details, door swings and original skirting.
  • No drying time
Walkable immediately after installation — keeps follow-on trades moving.
  • Heritage & retrofit
The right answer when screed isn't, and where preserving original fabric matters.
  • Incut installation
Where required, we route channels into existing concrete or screed to drop pipework into the substrate itself.
Choosing the Right System

We specify around the property, not the brochure.

Screeded
  • New builds & major renovations
  • Solid ground floors
  • Stone & large-format tile finishes
  • Where maximum heat output matters
Timber Suspended
  • Period properties
  • Upper floors
  • Renovations with access from below
  • Where weight is a concern
Floating
  • Retrofit with height restrictions
  • Fast-track programmes
  • Extensions & conversions
  • Where screed isn't practical
